Set at the base of the magnificent Pirin mountain range in the South West region of Bulgaria lies the 1000 year old town of Bansko. The mountains range up to 2914 m and being well to the East of the Alps the snow arrives early and stays late. No one who has visited these mountains will be surprised to learn that they are recognized by UNESCO as a world heritage site.
In recent years, Bansko, long famous for its ancient taverns and natural springs has developed into arguably the best ski resort in Eastern Europe. It has some 65 kilometers of ski slopes catering for all ranges of ability and there are plans to increase this to over 200 kilometers. The season lasts from the end of December to early May. (Number visiting last season)
The facilities are modern and well maintained. The main ski lift or gondola was built in 2002 and a second is to be constructed.
But Bansko aims to become an all year resort. For the summer visitor there are two golf courses designed by Ian Woosnam and hiking and bike rides in the mountains [anything else to highlight – picture of golf courses bike rides etc.]
